GENETICS OF PLUMAGE COLOR IN GUINEA FOWL

V.A. Zabiyakin

The genetics of plumage color in birds breeded in Russia was studied. It was established, that plumage color is polygenic determinant, and after a crossing of diversicoloured individuals the complex heterozygotes are arising with new phenotypes of feather color that was not found in their parents. The assumption was made that four alleles from four independent loci control the genetic determinants of color, and plumage color have double (eumelanin and phaeomelanin) nature. The obtained data suggest about a possibility to create the guinea fowls of the Volzhskaya white breed, of autosex on the feather color.

Key words: guinea fowl, feather pigmentation, breeding, autosexing.
