Polymorphism of chromosomal gene betC and plasmid localized loci betT(S) involved in osmoprotectants synthesis and transport was studied among 319 native isolates of Sinorhizobium meliloti, recovered from nodules and soil samples at four geographically distant gene centers of alfalfa. The significant difference between nodule and soil groups of isolates was shown by allelic rate of betC and betT(S) genes. Four dominant genotyping bet-classes among native isolates have similar popularity among nodule and soil groups of S. meliloti isolates. The linear correlation between salt tolerance of rhizobia and their symbiotic effectivity was revealed (r = 0,76). Proceeded data specified that bet-genes polymorphism at the north of Caucus gene center of alfalfa have been caused mainly by host-plant influence, whereas in salt affected area (Aral Sea region) the adaptation processes to abiotic stress factor have had a crucial role.

Key words: rhizobia, subpopulations, bet-genes, polymorphism, salt tolerance, symbiosis, alfalfa, gene centers.
