CHANGES IN PHOTOSYNTHETIC AND PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS INDUCED IN WHEAT PLANTS AFTER ACTION OF CADMIUM AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF NaCl

A.A. Ivanov, A.A. Kosobryukhov

The authors investigated the O2 and СО2 gas exchange, pigments and water content in leaves of 2-week wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.), separated from roots and exhibited during 96 h in 0.1, 1.0 and 5.0 mM water solutions of Cd(NO3)2 during 96 h. The opportunity of decrease in negative effect cadmium by low concentrations of NaCl in solution were estimated. It was shown that the presence of cadmium in solution resulted in decrease of oxygen evolution rate, СО2 uptake, chlorophyll content and relative water content (RWC) in leaves. Addition of NaCl to solution at final concentration 50 mM partly removed negative effect of Cd(NO3)2 at its low concentrations. The high (5.0 mM) concentration of Cd(NO3)2 resulted in to sharp decrease of photosynthetic activity.

Key words: wheat, cadmium, NaCl, CO2 uptake, O2 exchange, chlorophyll, relative water content.
